The best AI picture book makers

There is no one best maker: each is good at something different. Here is what each one does, from its own site, and where TuckJoy fits.

Wonderbly

Personalised books written and illustrated by people: you add a name and choose how the hero looks, inside a story they wrote.

Good at: Stories by professional authors and illustrators (Wonderbly says never AI), printed and posted as gifts, for children and adults.

Keep in mind: The story is theirs; you personalise it rather than tell your own.

Hooray Heroes

Personalised printed books: you design the hero's look (skin, hair, eyes) and choose a storyline.

Good at: Gift-ready books in soft or hard cover, printed on demand, with seasonal and family stories.

Keep in mind: The hero is built from a set of options, and the storylines are written for you.

Dinkleboo

Personalised printed story books for ages 0 to 8: the child's name in every book, and in some books their look and family.

Good at: A wide range of stories, a dedication printed on the first page, up to four more characters, and a preview of the full story before you choose soft or hard cover.

Keep in mind: The story is theirs, and the hero is built from options (gender, hair, eyes, skin tone).

Librio

Personalised printed picture books, hand-drawn: the child is made from options (name, skin tone, eyes, hair, glasses).

Good at: Over 8,000 character combinations, books in many languages, and a preview of the whole book before you buy.

Keep in mind: Books are made to order, 2 to 3 business days before shipping, and the story is theirs.

Mumablue

Personalised storybooks with an avatar you build from more than a million options.

Good at: Family books with up to three children and two adults, an online colouring page, and a recorded voice dedication.

Keep in mind: The hero is an avatar built from options, and the stories are theirs.

I See Me!

Personalised printed books, printed in the USA, written around the child's name.

Good at: Classic name books such as My Very Own Name, in soft cover, hard cover or gold foil.

Keep in mind: The personalisation is the child's name (one child, or a sibling); standard US shipping is about 7 to 10 business days.

Gemini Storybook

Part of Google's Gemini app: describe a story and it makes an illustrated storybook, usually 10 to 12 pages.

Good at: Free with a Google account, 45+ languages, read-aloud narration in some, a public share link, printing or a PDF from your browser, on the web and phones.

Keep in mind: Asking for a change makes a new version with all new pictures; Google's page says it is for people 18 and over.

Canva

A design tool with picture book templates and AI image tools.

Good at: Full control of the layout, the type and every page, alongside everything else you design.

Keep in mind: You write the story and lay out each page yourself; keeping a character the same across pictures is up to you.

ToonyStory

AI storybooks made from your photos, with animated videos and printed hardcovers.

Good at: Animated story videos as well as books, and it is free to create and preview a story.

Keep in mind: Printed books and videos are separate purchases; check its plans.

Childbook.ai

An AI book maker: start from an idea or your own story, with characters from descriptions or photos.

Good at: Writing your own text, a PDF export, and a printed copy at extra cost.

Keep in mind: Paid monthly plans; its site lists no free plan.
